Use your military education benefits at UI

If you are a current or former member of the US military, or are dependent on a member of the military service, you may be eligible for military education services at Indiana University. Our Veterans and Military Students Center can help you determine your eligibility for benefits and learn how to apply.

Start

The first step in utilizing your military education credits at IU is to apply for university admission. HeStudent Admissions Officehas detailed information on the application process forMilitary and Veteran Applicants.

You must also submit thoseFree Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), even if you plan to use your military training credits to fund school. Completing the FAFSA, which establishes your eligibility for federal and state financial aid, ensures you receive the maximum amount of aid to which you are eligible.

There are several types of military training perks available to service members and their dependents in UI. Your eligibility for benefits depends on a number of factors, including when and how long you served. If you are unsure about what benefits you qualify for or how to apply, contact the Veterans and Military Students Center. We'll help you solve it.

VA educational benefits

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides educational services to qualified veterans and their dependents through theGI Bill®and other educational support programs.

If you have at least 90 days of active duty after September 10, 2001, you may qualify for up to 36 months of educational benefits through the post-9/11 GI Bill®. Benefits may also be available to qualified dependents.

Yellow Band program.

If you are a nonresident student, you may qualify for the Yellow Ribbon Program, which provides additional financial assistance to nonresident students whose expenses are not fully covered by the Post-9/11 GI Bill®.

If you have at least two years of active duty, you may qualify for up to 36 months of educational benefits through the Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty. These benefits are available for 10 years after the end of active service.

If you are a member of the Selected Reserve (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, or Navy Reserve, or Army or Air National Guard), you may be eligible for up to 36 months of educational benefits through the Montgomery Act GI ® Selected Reserve.

If you are a veteran with a service-related disability that limits your ability to work or prevents you from working, you may be eligiblePreparation and employment of veteransBenefits, including funding education-related expenses such as tuition, books, and supplies. Benefits may also be available to qualified dependents.

If your parent or spouse was an active duty member and died in the service after September 11, 2001, you may qualify for the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship.

Fry Scholars Supplemental Scholarship

If you receive Fry Scholarship benefits, you are also eligible for the Fry Scholarship Supplementary Grant. There is no separate application for a grant; The award will be processed by the Veterans Support Services Office when it approves your enrollment as a Fry Scholar.

Get your VA education benefits

If you are awarded VA educational benefits, you must report to the Veterans Support Services Office at the beginning of each semester to complete the Request for Veterans Enrollment Certification form. We use this form to report your registration with VA.If your enrollment is not reported, you will not receive any benefits. (If you are a distance student, please contact the Veterans Support Services Office for assistance with enrollment certification.)

If you receive a VA education grant other than the post-9/11 GI Bill benefit, you mustverify your registrationwith the VA by phone or online every month.

Assistance with military training

Each branch of service provides instructional support for voluntary off-duty educational programs for active duty, National Guard, and reserve component members. The application process differs depending on the industry. Check with your Education Services Officer before registering.

The State of Indiana provides educational services to qualified Indiana veterans and their dependents.

The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs offers tuition and fee waivers for:

  • Indiana residents who have received the Purple Heart
  • Children of Disabled Indiana Veterans

If you are an active-duty member of the Indiana National Guard, you may qualify for the Indiana National Guard Tuition Supplemental Grant. The grant could cover up to 100 percent of tuition and periodic fees.

You must have a current FAFSA file and apply for the scholarship each semester that you wish to receive it.

UI Benefits

IU provides educational services to qualified veterans and their dependents enrolled at IU Bloomington.

If you don't live in Indiana, you may still qualify for state tuition. To obtain a residency permit, eligible students must notify their on-campus Veterans Services Office and provide documentation to confirm eligibility.

Indiana University is proud to introduce the USS Indiana Scholarship Program in recognition of America's newest submarine (SSN-789), named for the great state of Indiana and the men and women who serve on the ship. The grant also recognizes the 100th anniversary of IU's first training liaison with the US Navy, which began on October 1, 1918. The IU is associated with the USS Indiana by serving as the seat of the memorial to the former USS Indiana (BB-58) outside the UI. Bloomington Memorial Stadium.

The USS Indiana Scholarship is a one-time $5,000 award for education-related expenses at an IU campus. It is awarded each year to a current or newly admitted full-time graduate or student. It can be used in the academic year of the student's choice. To be eligible, a student must be or have been serving on the USS Indiana.

The IU Veterans Family Support Grant provides up to $2,000 annually in unrestricted funding for veterans and military students enrolled full-time at IU Bloomington who support a child or children under the age of 18. The grant will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis. -Served basis until funds are exhausted.
